Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a time for joy, forgiveness, and family. For 78-year-old Mr Mahlan, the festival carried a poignant weight. Estranged from his children, his wish was not for grand gestures, but for the simple, familiar warmth of a shared meal and the sound of companionship. This heartfelt desire showcases the profound meaning behind every act of wish granting.
In his time of need, Mr Mahlan’s definition of family was beautifully redefined by his neighbours, whose daily check-ins became a lifeline. In just three days, Ambulance Wish Singapore (AWS) volunteers worked tirelessly to honour his wish, transforming his home into a space for a heartfelt Hari Raya celebration with his wife and this cherished community, delivering a truly memorable wish experience.
A Celebration Forged by Community
The gathering was a powerful testament to the bonds of neighbourhood. His elderly neighbours, despite their own frailties, dressed in their festive best and joined with full hearts. Against a backdrop of soulful P. Ramlee tunes, the room filled with the warmth of shared food, conversation, and quiet joy.
Mr Mahlan, though reserved, was the gracious host, presenting small food gifts to his guests. In turn, his neighbours showed how companionship builds resilience, creating a circle of care that filled the space left by absence. This beautiful coming-together was a perfect example of how the community makes a wish granting experience so special.
A Reminder That No One Is Alone
This gathering was a profound example of Ambulance Wish Singapore’s mission: to bring dignity, comfort, and connection to those in life’s final chapter. For Mr Mahlan, it was a powerful reminder that he is valued and loved.

Ms Vanessa’s Celebration of Life was, at its heart, a portrait of strength. Told that her cancer was now terminal, she chose to face this season with courage, creating a living funeral where she could stand in the same room as the people she loves, hear their voices, and celebrate the journey they have shared. She stayed closely involved in the planning, bringing the same determination and clarity she has shown in her work and personal life. The evening was filled with light moments and deep connections – from sincere speeches and spoken encouragement, to messages flowing in through livestream from loved ones overseas, all reflecting how widely and deeply she has touched others. It was moving to see how her international community came together, both in person and online, to hold space for her courage and her joy. During the celebration, her pastor shared reflections and heartfelt speeches that honoured Vanessa’s courage, resilience, and impact. As the night drew to a close, the celebration rose into a joyful finale. When Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” played, Vanessa and her friends danced with bright, fearless energy and laughter, a powerful picture of joy and strength in the face of uncertainty.
